Firewood With Purpose Supporting Tribal Elders
The Washoe Tribe of Nevada and California operates Washoe (Wá∙šiw) Wood to provide reliable firewood for the local community while sustaining a larger mission: supporting Tribal Elders through the Elder Wood Program. Firewood is a primary heat source for many households across the region, and for some elders it can be essential during cold months when other fuels are costly or hard to access. Each purchase helps keep this work moving—turning firewood sales into real, practical support for elders’ homes.
Today, the program is built around a dedicated wood yard and a year-round crew that cuts, splits, and prepares wood for both community orders and elder support. By using wood sourced through restoration and thinning efforts, the Tribe helps put forest materials to good use while contributing to healthier, safer forests.
